Most people driving down from Bangalore or Mysore stop at Wayanad, see the hills, and turn back for home. They never see the sea, and it's closer than they think. Naz's Farm House sits at the Kozhikode-side foot of the Thamarassery ghat, so the Arabian Sea is under an hour away. Spend one day in the hills and the next on the beach, all from the same base.
Kozhikode Beach
36.5 km · ~55 minKozhikode's city beach is the most reviewed one on TripAdvisor, and the reason is the sunset. The long promenade, the old sea piers and the evening breeze bring the whole town out. Come hungry. The stalls along the front serve kallummakkaya (mussels), uppilittathu (salted pickles) and sulaimani tea, and Kozhikode's well-known biriyani restaurants are a few minutes away.
Kappad Beach
~37 km · ~55 minKappad is where Vasco da Gama landed on 20 May 1498, the start of European trade with India. A memorial stone on the beach marks the spot. Today it's a cleaner, calmer beach with golden sand and rocks at the water's edge. It has also earned Blue Flag certification, an international eco-label for clean, well-managed beaches, which makes it a good choice for families.
Beypore Beach
~47 km · ~1 hr 10 minAt Beypore the Chaliyar river meets the sea. You can walk out along the pulimuttu, the 860-metre breakwater, as the sun goes down. Beypore is also famous for its uru, the traditional wooden dhows that are still built by hand in the yards beside the river. A short climb up the lighthouse gives you the whole coastline at once.
Payyoli Beach
~49 km · ~1 hr 10 minFor a quieter stretch of sand, head north to Payyoli. There's little development and few crowds, which is why it has some of the highest ratings among Kozhikode's beaches. It's a good spot for a slow walk while the city beaches are busy.
How to fit it into your trip
Hills + sea in one weekendDay 1: Drive down from Bangalore or Mysore via NH766, Bandipur and the Thamarassery ghat, and reach us in daylight. Day 2: Go down to the coast in the morning, have lunch in Kozhikode town, then take your pick for sunset: Kozhikode Beach for the food or Beypore for the breakwater. You'll be back at the farmhouse for a quiet night in the hills. Day 3: Head back up the ghat for home. For the drive itself, see our Bangalore weekend route guide.
A note on the sea
Safety firstThe Arabian Sea can be rough, especially in the monsoon months (June to September). Enjoy the shore, paddle where it's calm, and follow any lifeguard flags or local advice before going in. October to February is the most pleasant time on the coast.
