This year Mahanavami falls on Tuesday 20 October and Vijayadashami on Wednesday 21 October. Take the Monday off and you have five days, from Saturday 17 to Wednesday 21. While the cities fill up for the festival, a private villa in the hills near Wayanad is a quiet way to spend it with family or friends.

Why a staycation here

The whole villa is yours

Naz's Farm House is booked by one group at a time, so you won't share it with other guests. You get two bedrooms, The Majlis loft for extra sleepers, a double-height hall, a full kitchen, a garden and a terrace over forested hills. October is right after the monsoon, when the hills are at their greenest and the evenings are cool.

From Bangalore and Mysore

Bangalore: roughly 320 km · Mysore: roughly 175 km

The drive is NH766 through Mysore, Gundlupet and Bandipur into Wayanad, then down the nine hairpin bends of the Thamarassery ghat to us at the bottom. Plan around the Bandipur forest stretch, which is closed to traffic from 9 PM to 6 AM, and aim to cross the ghat in daylight. Leave early on Saturday and you'll be on the terrace by evening. Our Bangalore weekend route guide has the full timing.

From anywhere else in India

Calicut airport: ~46 km · Kozhikode station: ~37 km

Fly into Calicut International Airport (CCJ) and we're about 1 hr 20 min away by taxi. Kozhikode railway station is about 1 hr 15 min away and is well connected to Chennai, Mumbai, Mangalore and Kochi. If you're coming up from Kochi by road, see our Kochi weekend guide.

Three easy days

Hills, a waterfall and the sea

Day 1: Arrive, settle in and watch the sun go down from the terrace. Light the BBQ in the garden. Day 2: Drive up the ghat to Lakkidi View Point and Pookode Lake for a day in Wayanad. Day 3: Visit Amarad Waterfalls, 9 km away, in the morning. In the afternoon go down to Kozhikode for a biriyani lunch and sunset on the beach. Our beach guide covers the four best ones.

For families and groups

Carrom, karaoke and a loft sleepover

The house is built for staying in as much as going out. There's a carrom board in the games nook, a Bluetooth speaker for music, and The Majlis loft where children can have a floor sleepover. The kitchen is yours to cook in, with a fridge, kettle and sandwich maker.
